The only surviving Medieval codex of Galician-Portuguese secular poetry: tracing history through luxury pink colors

Abstract The Ajuda Songbook is an exceptional illuminated manuscript being the only surviving codex of Galician-Portuguese secular poetry; it was produced in end thirteenth century, beginning fourteenth century. diversity colors accentuated by presence lapis lazuli blue and brazilwood pink, demonstrates desire to produce a sumptuous manuscript. Pink is, this context, luxury color its identification attests one earliest known occurrences artworks. Scientific analysis showed, for light pinks, different formulation from that found fifteenth-century books hours all historical reconstructions these prepared date. This knowledge used further expand database previously built our laboratory applied characterization pink shades Songbook. Thirteen recipes were selected seven Medieval treatises reference materials based on such information. Three types achieved, defined as translucent rose, red. rose obtained where egg white extraction, no other additives are present; with calcium carbonate; red wider range recipes, which ingredients not mentioned. These then paints, analytical results thus compared data pinks seen Songbook’s architectural backgrounds. We able reproduce very well using infrared spectroscopy, identifying main ingredients: carbonate filler; lead pigment produces pink; binder polysaccharide fingerprint similar mesquite gum. For chromophore color, application chemometrics approaches molecular fluorescence spectra highlighted high degree similarity paint reconstructions.
